Monarch Tagging Demonstration

On September 15, 16, 22, 23 (weather permitting) Ann Vance and her helpers, Jamie Pakkala and Neva Carmichael, will demonstrate the tagging of Monarch Butterflies at Hawk Cliff just before the hawk presentation in the afternoon. Bruce Parker from London will demonstrate at the morning sessions.
Tags are brought from Monarch Watch, a program made possible through the University of Kansas and Dr. Chip Taylor. The long term purpose of the tagging is to assure the continuation of the migration in eastern North America. To accomplish this, people need to monitor the monarch population and educate the public and the policy makers to all factors, human caused and natural, which affect the monarch population.
A small tag with printed information is attached to the underside of the hindwing. Information about the specimen is recorded and the butterfly is released.
More information about Monarch Watch is available at www.MonarchWatch.org.
